Major challenges in building Maasvlakte 2 wind farm

Maasvlakte 2 is an ideal location for a wind farm. The wind blows hard and there are no houses in the vicinity. The wind turbines are located in the industrial area of Maasvlakte 2 on the seawall, both on the hard (dike) and the soft (beach) seawall. Therefore, Eneco built Maasvlakte 2 Wind Farm here on behalf of Rijkswaterstaat.

Building a wind farm on the seawall; that brings a lot of challenges. Challenges that Eneco and its construction partners were happy to take on. Most of the construction took place outside the storm season (from 1 October to 1 April), an important requirement to ensure safety. And that brought with it a tight schedule.

Construction preparations started in mid-February 2022, on 1 April construction could actually begin. Under great time pressure, 22 wind turbines were founded and constructed in a few months, so that by 1 October the sea wall was restored.

The turbines were then connected and commissioned one by one. The video gives a bird's eye view of the construction.
