Windpark Maasvlakte 2
On the outer edge of Maasvlakte 2, in Rotterdam's port area, stands
Windpark Maasvlakte 2. This wind farm's 22 innovative onshore wind
turbines are built on and in the Netherlands' flood barrier in 2022. Twelve
turbines are on the beach, partly in the tide line, and 10 are on the dike.
This long ribbon of wind turbines has a capacity of 119.3 megawatts and
generates 416 GWh of green electricity annually. This is equivalent to the
average annual consumption of 152,000 households.
Green power to make the Netherlands more sustainable
Wind farm Maasvlakte 2 was built by Eneco on behalf of the Rijkswaterstaat. It takes all the green power generated by the wind farm and uses it to make the energy supply of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management completely sustainable. For offices but also for the 20 tunnels, 1143 bridges and 5,500 kilometres of highway lighting that Rijkswaterstaat manages. And that still leaves half of the power generated annually by Windpark Maasvlakte 2. This power is passed on to other government parties such as the Ministries of Defence, Justice and Security and the Interior and Kingdom Relations and to the State Property Company. With power from Windpark Maasvlakte 2, the entire central government operates on 40% green power. An important contribution to the central government's goal of using 100% renewable electricity by 2030.Want to know more about Windpark Maasvlakte 2?

On the (extensive) beach on Maasvlakte 2, where there are 12 wind turbines, recreationalists, except kite-surfers, are welcome. Walking, swimming, kayaking and surfing, for example, are allowed. But as a recreational user, what do you actually notice about the wind farm?

Environment fund Maasvlakte 2 Wind Farm supports community initiatives
Because of the arrival of Windpark Maasvlakte 2, Eneco has set up the Fund Windpark Maasvlakte 2. This fund aims to give a boost to nature, liveability or business activity in the vicinity of the wind farm.
Beach vehicles on Maasvlakte beach
Some of Maasvlakte 2 Wind Farm's wind turbines are in the surf of the North Sea, close to the beach, at least at high tide. Eneco has specially developed vehicles to safely drop off maintenance people at the turbines in all conditions.
Major challenges in the construction of Maasvlakte 2 Wind Farm
The wind turbines of Maasvlakte 2 Wind Farm are located in the industrial area of Maasvlakte 2 on the seawall, both on the hard (dike) and soft (beach) seawall. But building on the seawall poses major challenges. How we did it, we like to show.
Facts and figures
LocationMaasvlakte 2 wind farm is built on the seawall of the Second Maasvlakte in the Rotterdam port area. The turbines are spread over a length of 7.5 kilometres; 2.5 kilometres of hard seawall (dike) and 5 kilometres of soft seawall (beach).
Windmills
- 22 units: 10 on the hard seawall (dike) and 12 on the soft seawall (beach)
- 13 tall turbines including 1 on the embankment and 12 on the beach
- 9 lower turbines on the embankment
Annual revenue416 GWh, purchased entirely by the Department of Public Works.
Features turbines
- The Vestas V-117 has a rotor diameter of 117 metres and a mast height of 76 metres. This 4.3 MW turbine makes 17.5 rotations per minute.
- The Vestas V-162 has a rotor diameter of 162 metres and a mast height of 103 metres. This turbine with an output of 6.2 MW makes 12.1 rotations per minute.
Foundation
• Foundation on the embankment by mound foundations on the landward side of the embankment. On top of this is an anchor cage 4.58 m wide and 3 m high.• Foundation on the beach using monopiles, a technique previously used only at sea. A monopile is about 40 metres high, has a diameter of 5 metres and weighs about 300 tonnes.
